The series of parliamentary events related to the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2024 will be opened – in line with the tradition of interparliamentary cooperation in the European Union – by the meeting of Chairpersons of COSAC, the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union, on 28-29 July 2024. Zoltán Tessely, Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of the Hungarian National Assembly and Richárd Hörcsik, Founding Chairman of the committee will be the hosts of the event to be organised in Budapest. The meeting will be opened by István Jakab, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, which will be followed by the keynote speech of János Bóka, Minister for European Union Affairs of Hungary on the programme and priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The participating members of parliaments will also discuss the state of play of the Western Balkan and Eastern enlargements of the European Union with keynote speakers Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner for the Neighbourhood and Enlargement and Péter Sztáray, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary.

The Office of the Hungarian National Assembly also supports the parliamentary dimension of the Hungarian presidency with written background materials. In connection with the two agenda items of the meeting of Chairpersons of COSAC, unique background notes including infographics will be prepared. In addition, the parliamentary publication with the title ‘The Hungarian National Assembly and the EU Presidency’ will also be available from the time of the first event of the parliamentary dimension of the Hungarian presidency. This publication introduces the Hungarian National Assembly and its committee system, furthermore provides an overview of the different policy areas related to the parliamentary events of the Hungarian presidency. These materials will not only be available to conference participants, but will also be accessible in three languages on the presidency website of the Hungarian National Assembly.
