Parliamentary events related to the Hungarian presidency continue in 2025: Meeting of the Secretaries General of the EU Parliaments, with participation of parliaments of candidate countries

The peculiarity of the parliamentary cooperation of the presidency of the Council of the EU is that the national parliament of the country holding the presidency in the second semester organises the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments in the following semester, and the Meeting of the Secretaries General of the EU Parliaments in preparation for it.
The Hungarian National Assembly will organise the Meeting of the Secretaries General of the European Union Parliaments on 9-10 February 2025 in Budapest. The event will be opened by László Kövér, Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, and hosted by György Such, Director General of the Hungarian National Assembly.
At the conference the Hungarian National Assembly will present the draft programme of the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments organised by the Hungarian presidency on 11-12 May 2025, as well as documents related to Interparliamentary EU information exchange (IPEX).
In addition to these two agenda items – which are permanent at the meetings of Secretaries General – the Secretaries General also exchange views on two other topics of interest to the work of the parliamentary offices. First, the topic of education on democracy and citizen education programmes in parliaments will be addressed in more depth, during which György Such, Director General of the Hungarian National Assembly, Alessandro Chiocchetti, Secretary General of the European Parliament and Harald Dossi, Secretary General of the Parliament of Austria will deliver keynote speeches.
Afterward, they will review the possibilities of forms of cooperation of EU parliaments with the parliaments of candidate countries, and will listen to three keynote speeches: Sárdi Péter, Director for Foreign Relations of the Office of the Hungarian National Assembly, Srdjan Smiljanic, Secretary General of the National Assembly of Serbia and Jonathan Murphy, Head of Programme of Inter Pares will share their experiences on the topic.
